The circle of fifths

The circle of fifths is a map of all the keys and how they relate. It sits under the key signatures and the practice tools in this section, so it is worth meeting first.

The twelve keys in a ring

Explore the circle

Open the circle from the More tab. It is a ring of the twelve keys. Neighbours on the ring share almost all of their notes, which is why music moves between them so easily. Tap a key to see the chords that belong to it.

How the ring is read

Reading around the ring from C at the top, each step clockwise adds one sharp, and each step counter-clockwise adds one flat. That is exactly what the key signatures chapter reads off the chart, and what the Make and Remember tool helps you memorise. The same ring runs through all three.
